Intro

Türkiye is a country of diverse landscapes, cultures, and histories, but it also faces challenges related to marginalisation and inequality. Its marginalised regions often struggle with issues such as poverty, limited infrastructure, inadequate healthcare, and educational disparities. Some parts of Türkiye, for instance, have faced longstanding challenges due to a combination of historical, social, and political factors. Certain communities in this region have experienced periods of tension and conflict, impacting their socio-economic well-being. Similarly, the eastern Anatolia region has faced challenges including a lack of robust infrastructure, economic underdevelopment, and restricted access to essential services.

While progress has been made, there is still much work to be done to ensure that all regions of Türkiye can thrive and contribute to the country's overall development. By acknowledging and addressing the unique needs and challenges of its marginalized regions, Türkiye can move closer to achieving a more inclusive and prosperous future for all its citizens.

Connecting Europe and Asia since 480 B.C.: MARGISTAR Explores the Republic of Türkiye

Connecting the Anatolian Peninsula in western Asia and the Balkan Peninsula in southeast Europe, the Republic of Türkiye has been the bridge between Europe and Asia for over 2,500 years. The country is renowned for its cuisine, rich cultural heritage, intricate architecture, and varied landscapes. Although it spans across an area of 783,356 square kilometres, making it the world’s 36th largest country, Türkiye is only the 107th most inhabited country worldwide. In this blog, we will provide an overview of Türkiye’s topography, geology, and the marginalisation challenges the inhabitants of its mountainous regions face.

Unearthing the Threat: Erosion’s Toll on the Mountainous Areas of Türkiye

Communities in Türkiye's remote mountainous regions grapple with a myriad of environmental, economic, and social challenges. Among these challenges, erosion stands out as a significant concern. This blog provides and overview of the erosion challenges in Türkiye's mountainous regions and illustrates how soil erosion and flooding caused by deforestation can be counteracted by public intervention by reference to the “Erosion Control Project” for the Çakıt Stream Watershed in southern Türkiye.
