From Traps to Transformations:
MARGISTAR WG2 Final Report
MARGISTAR WG2 Final Report
Europe's remote rural and mountain areas deliver water, renewable energy, food, and unique landscapes, yet many are caught in polytraps: interconnected demographic, economic, environmental, and institutional pressures that reinforce each other and are hard to escape. Fixing one problem at a time does not work.
Drawing on four years of MARGISTAR research, this report from MARGISTAR's Working Group 2 brings together 24 case studies, a three-round Delphi panel, and participatory workshops with local communities in four European regions. It sets out what mountain communities want their futures to look like, why current systems keep them from getting there, and which pathways can help, from individual choices and place-based initiatives to national, EU, and science-policy action.
