On April 17 and 18, the Irish Institute of Digital Business (IIDB) at Dublin City University (DCU) welcomed international researchers from the MARGISTAR COST Action to the project's second annual General Assembly in Dublin. Prof Theo Lynn, Prof Colm O'Gorman, and Antonia Egli represent Ireland within the MARGISTAR consortium and lead the Action's Science Communications team. Over two days, consortium members focused on strategies to further progress MARGISTAR during the second grant period and met with stakeholders in Ireland to understand how different communities were seeking to address issues through rural town regeneration, digitisation, re-afforestation, or diversifying agriculture.  

This December, MARGISTAR’s Antonia Egli presented the COST Action’s research poster at Dublin City University’s Engaged Research Festival, hosted by DCU’s Centre for Engaged Research. In this blog, the Centre’s Coordinator, Luke Quinlan, takes a closer look at the meaning and potential of engaged research, as well as the challenges and barriers associated with its practices. 

MARGISTAR has been out and about this autumn. Shortly after a first in-person meeting with Working Group 2 in Türkiye, Working Group 1 members met in Albania this October. Read on for a short overview of our COST Action meeting, along with a glimpse of the Albanian peaks and valleys we were lucky to visit.

The 7th Forum Carpaticum, themed "Carpathian Futures – Critical Transitions," took place in Krakow, Poland, from the 25th to 28th of September 2023. Held biennially, this conference embraces an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach, promoting sustainable and eco-friendly solutions for the Carpathians and other mountain regions. One of its primary objectives this year was to foster knowledge exchange and collaboration among diverse stakeholders, addressing pressing transitions.

In September 2023, MARGISTAR Working Group 2 (WG2) members travelled to Düzce city in Türkiye. Read on for a brief summary of this COST Action meeting and the experiences we had, including our field trip to Efteni Lake, Güzeldere Waterfall Nature Park, and the Kardüz Upland.

In May 2023, MARGISTAR members travelled to Finland for their first in-person gathering (and, for some, their first polar summer) in the remote Lappish towns of Inari and Utsjoki. Read on for a short overview of this initial COST Action meeting, the experiences we had, and many of our members’ first introductions to indigenous Sámi culture, politics, and current marginalisation challenges.
